Chapter 1172

Still heavily leaning on his cane, Hadjar knelt down and placed his hand on the surface of the gates. While immersed in the meditation of the Heavens and the Earth, gradually invoking their trial upon his soul, Shakhug’Nagutan was in his most vulnerable state. Hadjar still only had one chance to strike. One attack, as accurate as possible, but not so draining as to send him to his forefathers together with the demon. Just one.

Hadjar listened to the wind that gently played with his hair, as if a monster wasn’t currently trying to open a passage into the mortal world. Hadjar heard a slight rustling of clothes. The lord was no more than a hundred paces away. That distance was insignificant to a cultivator who possessed a True Kingdom of the Sword. But only when the cultivator could see his target. Hadjar only heard his target.

He straightened up and held out his hand. A wind sword should be enough to hit his target. All he had to do was focus on the sounds and his instincts. The wind was roaring. The echo of Techniques was ringing out. Down at the base of the gates, Arkemeya was fighting Kudang. That wasn’t it. Not what he needed.

Hadjar gradually blocked out all unnecessary sounds. First, the sounds of the thunderstorm approaching the gates, summoned by the meditation of the Heavens and the Earth. Then the rumble of the archers’ and mages’ Techniques. Finally, the sound of the fight between Arkemeya and the demon disappeared. All that Hadjar could hear now was, thump… thump… thump… Shakhug’Nagutan’s heart was beating steadily and calmly. Hadjar aimed his attack at it. He poured his will and mysteries into it.

A ghostly slash burst out from the tip of his wind sword and flew over the gates, striking the lord’s chest. He shuddered and coughed, spitting out blood.

A deep gash formed on his chest. It exposed his ribcage and dark, crimson blood flowed across the stones of the gates.

“Nice... try... human…” The lord’s robes fluttered more violently. He was getting to his feet.

The first roars of the imminent thunderstorm came from the sky — the trial remained uninterrupted. Thump… thump… thump… the demon’s heart was still beating steadily.

“But you missed.” Shakhug’Nagutan ran his hand over the wound and it healed.

“Goodbye, swordsman. I enjoyed our conversation.”

The lord snapped his fingers and something invisible struck Hadjar in the chest. Crushing his ribs as if they were twigs, the blow knocked the breath out of him and blood spurted from his dry mouth. Hadjar dropped his cane and fell backwards. Plummeting, he knew he’d meet his end because he’d been overly confident. After all, he could’ve used the help of his neural network as well, but now… Apparently, the Black General had been right — they really weren’t that different after all.

Arkemeya sensed that something was wrong as she parried another strike of Kudang’s sword. Covering herself with her sand wings, she turned around just in time to see Hadjar falling toward the sharp rocks at the foot of the gates.
